Kevin Kwan

Best-selling author Kevin Kwan helped transform his semi-autobiographical novel Crazy Rich Asians into box-office gold when he insisted on retaining casting control over director Jon M. Chu’s phenomenally successful 2018 film adaptation. Foregrounding Asian acting talent and subverting stereotypes, the movie made history as one of highest-grossing romantic comedies ever. The Singapore-born, Texas-raised Kwan grew up with an international lineup of cinematic influences. His affectionately satirical view of the rich and shameless was shaped by lavish literary classics like Merchant Ivory’s A Room with a View (1985), as well as epicurean delights like Luca Guadagnino’s I Am Love (2009). Kwan’s film curation also honors his Asian heritage, saluting the ravishing melancholy of Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love (2000) and “the beautiful strangeness” of Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s ghostly fable Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010).

“Every scene I write, I have to see it in my mind play out like a movie. Every single thing theyre wearing, how their hair looks, if theyre wearing makeup, if theres a pimple—every detail has to be this cinematic experience.”
